OTE Hurricane Shop Story
The passion started in Brian Head, UT in 1995 were my husband taught bike, design and build trails. I hosted a trail building clinic for IMBA where I came into contact with some great people who shared my passion. The Color Country Cycling Club, a group of great people who volunteer a lot of there time for events, trail maintenance and many other things. Cimarron and Bryce from St George. Cimarron worked for the BLM and was a great mountain bike advocate in getting new trails approved and done. Her husband Bryce built trail and worked at a bike shop. Cimarron became a great source of information for me, and when she asked me to come help build and design trails with her in Bryce for the BLM, I was honored. We had a lot of fun and some great Ameracorp Groups. It was always great when Cimarron graced us with her presence out on the trail with her high heals to keep us in line and make sure Bryce and I weren’t making anything to technical.
Quentin managed several bike shops in Brian Head, before we ended up managing Copper Chase Condos for 6 years. The only thing that kept us sane was squeezing in training for mountain bike racing and helping promote races in Brian Head. We also knew that Copper Chase was a stepping stone to our future dream job of opening our own bike shop.
We had been talking with Troy Rarick during this time about being a franchisee of Over The Edge Sports as well and were considering buying his partner at the Fruita store out. We really respected and liked what Troy had accomplished in Fruita Colorado thru mountain biking. We shared a lot of the same passions and philosophy on biking and bike ethics. Don’t get me wrong, we don’t see eye to eye on every thing, but than who does! Thank God we are not all alike!
Quentin and I had come down out of the snow to ride our bikes we were stopped at the stop sign on and 100, getting ready to turn on 59 to go ride Gooseberry, when I spotted a for sale sign across the street for the house on the corner with a big yard. Quentin and I had the same thought (“that would be a great place for a bike shop”) We drove over knocked on the door, no one was home so we wrote the number down and called later, worked out a deal and the rest is history! We called Troy discussed the franchise some more, he came down and took a look at the location and approved!
We began renovation. We tore down to brick walls took the ceiling up and tore out the old carpet to find nice wood underneath, added a deck and did some landscaping and we were ready to go!
